Values + Values

We stand behind every bag that we create.

Affordable Luxury

We started HARE+HART on the belief that luxury leather should be available at non-luxury prices. Our styles are simple and functional so that you are not paying additional costs for unnecessary design details, and the patterns are designs to best utilize each hide, minimizing cutting loss.

MATERIALS + CRAFTSMANSHIP

We have spent the past 6 years building relationships with high-grade leather tanneries and fair-wage factories around the world. Some of these also work with well known designers, and some are little-known, family-run shops. Big or small, we only work with suppliers that provide the highest level of quality and craftsmanship.

TRANSPARENT PRODUCTION

At HARE+HART, we want you to know exactly what you’re buying into when you purchase one of our bags. When we started our company, we created a Transparent Production Policy, so that you are always informed of what materials were used to make each product and where it was made.

OUR BETTER LEATHER

Our signature vegetable-tanned leather is made using the ancient practice in which hides are tanned using natural materials found in vegetable matter, such as tree bark, roots, leaves and fruits. The resulting leathers are thicker and more durable than standard chrome tanned hides, and the process is significantly more environmentally friendly.

Approximately 90% of our hides originate in South America (the rest are sourced from other parts of the world) where they are cured with a salt brine. Much like pickling, this preserves the hide and prevents bacteria from growing.

The hide is then cleaned by a process called liming, in which the hides are soaked in drums containing lime liquors. This is followed by de-liming, which is not ‘un-cleaning’, but, rather, priming the leather for the vegetable-tannins by removing the lime agents.

But before the tanning occurs, each hide goes through a sort of spa/yoga experience called bating, which makes it softer and more flexible. Finally, each hide is tanned using vegetable based tannins and dried. These natural compounds prevent the hide from decomposing and are the related to the tannins found in red wine.

Our leathers are then shipped to our finishing facility where they are colored, conditioned, buffed and sometimes embossed to give them the desired color and effect. Once the leathers are primped and perfect, they are ready to be crafted into your new handbag.

history

In Argentina the story first starts,
Two friends who had been long apart.
Both lovers of leather
and wanting to do it better
So they founded Hare+Hart.

They live in different hemispheres
And talk via the internet-isphere.
Ideas and designs,
All shared online,
Al Gore, to you they're in debt-isphere.

All leather is vegetable-tanned,
Then assembled with loving hands.
Organic linings,
And brass findings,
The finishing touches of their brand.

They try to do their best
to make bags that stand out from the rest
sustainable
yet attainable
With their own sense of style and zest.
